Jeb Bush says that he and Hillary Clinton will face
challenges due to their last names
During the Long Island Association’s biannual luncheon, Jeb Bush acknowledged the difficulties that he and Hillary Clinton will face due to their last names.
Bush stated that he and then former U.S. Senator Clinton were not getting the support of some voters because of voters’ concern that the Bushes and Clintons were becoming the only families to occupy the White House.
CNN quoted Bush as saying, “ The first people I met in the Spring of 2007 were strong supporters of President Obama in the primary and I said why? He goes, ‘We have Bush, then we have a Clinton, then we have a Bush, then we’re gonna have a Clinton, then we’re gonna have a Bush.’”
Bush said that he understands the person’s position and that he will have to “overcome” those concerns if he decides to run for president in 2016: “So I get the point. I get the point. If I run, I will have to overcome that and so will Hillary by the way.”
Jeb Bush’s mother, former First Lady Barbara Bush, has said that she does not want Jeb Bush to run for president because it will give the impression of a family dynasty.
The former first lady was quoted on C-SPAN’s “First Ladies Series” as saying, “There’s no question in my mind that Jeb is the best-qualified person to run for president, but I hope he won’t…There are other families. I refuse to accept that this great country isn’t raising other wonderful people.”
During an appearance on the “Tonight Show” with former host Jay Leno, former President George W. Bush told Leno that he will support Jeb Bush if he decides to run and that he believed his brother would be a “great president.”
The former president also said that his mother told him not to enter the 1992 Texas governor’s race against former Texas Governor Ann Richards.
According to former President Bush, his mother told him, “You’ll lose.” According to a McClatchy/Marist poll that was released last week, Hillary Clinton has a double-digit lead in a general election over most of the potential GOP presidential candidates.
Rep. Paul Ryan is the only candidate that she doesn’t have a double-digit lead over. The poll shows her beating Jeb Bush by 20 percentage points.
The poll also shows Bush trailing in the 2016 GOP Presidential Race behind former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AZ), Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).
Jeb Bush hinted that one of the ways he can galvanize potential voters is by toning down the rhetoric coming from some members within the Republican Party.
Jeb Bush said that the discussion has become heated and is a contributing factor in some voters turning away from the Republican Party.
CNN quoted Bush as saying, “I think we’ve become a little more harsh than we need to be, so the first step would be to tone it down a bit, chill out. We shouldn’t be sending signals that turn them off from the get-go.”
